the Turning

I developed and created ‘The Turning’ series of paintings before Covid, before Trump’s second term, and before the renewed erosion of women’s rights. Seven years later these paintings appear to have had an element of prescience.

The works express the possibility of a truer relationship between human beings and the natural world. They ask what might emerge if we were to recognise our interdependence with Nature rather than continue to position ourselves as separate from it.

The paintings depict women accompanied by wild animals, individuals that suggest alliance, protection and resistance. Often armed, they occupy an uncertain territory between collapse and renewal. The series considers the possibility that older ways of relating to the living world may re-emerge during periods of profound transformation.
