the Turning
‘The Turning’ depicts women and wild animals in relationships that represent alliance, protection and resistance. Many of the figures wear pieces of historical U.S. military uniforms from its colonising past, a reference to the indigenous traditions of counting coup and wearing the bounty of fallen enemies. They are armed as they occupy an uncertain territory between collapse and renewal. The series considers the possibility that older ways of relating to the living world may re-emerge during periods of profound transformation.
I developed and created ‘The Turning’ pre-Covid, before Trump’s second term, and before the most recent attack on women’s rights. It was shown at the end of 2019. Sadly these paintings had an element of prescience. The series was previously exhibited as ‘A New World’
